Almost Complete Bio
Hailing from NYC’s Chinatown, Annie Tan is a sophomore studying Education and Urban Studies at Columbia College. As AAA’s Event Advisor, Annie hopes to raise awareness about the shifting APIA identity and culture, raise discussion, and foster change on and off campus through service and other events. Her most recent work includes producing an Asian American Sex Education Documentary, which will be released sometime next fall.
At Columbia, Annie is a co-coordinator of Freedom School at Columbia’s Intercultural Resource Center. She has also been a mentor at Youth Mic, an America Reads tutor in Harlem, and a tutor at the Riverside Language Program. Other community efforts included educating local children through the Hester Street Collaborative and working in the youth program with CAAAV (Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence).
Annie also attended Brooklyn Technical High School as a member of the Class of 2007, where she worked with the National BETA Club as a Soup Kitchen Chairperson, led the Mural Painting Club as President, and participated in yearbook and chorus. She was also a member of the National Honor Society.
Issues in the Asian American community that Annie finds particularly important are spreading awareness about basic issues affecting the APIA community and beyond and building coalitions with other groups in America to foster change and development. Her abiding life quote is, “Life is only and truly what you make of it, so make it yours today.” She loves to sing, take long walks in mild weather with good friends, and watch lots of (good) television.
